Ahead of the Week 1 “Monday Night Football” bout between the Chiefs and Broncos, Payton had one idea to prepare his team for Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

Why Sean Payton put Chiefs’ logo on Broncos’ practice field | Broncos Wire
For the first time in the rivalry’s history, the Broncos will open their season at Arrowhead, with both teams looking to bounce back after losing their starting quarterbacks late in their 2025 campaigns.
To get Denver ready for the primetime atmosphere and raucous environment, Payton began practice with ESPN’s Monday Night Football theme, and, in an interesting move, painted the Kansas City logo on the 50-yard line of the Broncos’ practice field (something he’s done with opponents’ logos in the past).

Just five months ago, general manager Brett Veach acknowledged that any time he mentioned potentially drafting a first-round right tackle before the NFL Draft, it was only as a smokescreen.
Life has come quickly at the Chiefs since then. Offensive tackle has to be considered their biggest worry heading into Week 1, and the overall O-line depth also remains a major concern, especially with quarterback Patrick Mahomes returning from December knee surgery.

Patrick Mahomes is expected to start the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener Monday against the Denver Broncos, according to coach Andy Reid.
Since the Chiefs’ offseason began, Mahomes has made it his mission to be in uniform for Week 1, even though he had surgery in December to repair the torn ACL and LCL in his left knee.
Although he was held out of the preseason, Mahomes has not missed any of the Chiefs’ practices since the start of training camp, when he was cleared in late July to participate in all football activities.

It should be noted that these depth charts are considered “unofficial,” even though they come from the team. Why is that the case? The team’s PR staff assembles them, not the coaching staff. One reason to take them with a grain of salt: In Week 1 of the 2017 NFL preseason, Tyler Bray was listed ahead of Patrick Mahomes. That said, these aren’t entirely uninformed. They’re often based on what the PR staff observes in practice.

NFL Network: Buccaneers, QB Baker Mayfield agree to three-year, $165 million extension
Tampa Bay is signing Mayfield to a three-year, $165 million contract extension, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday. Tampa Bay later announced the extension through the 2029 season.
The news comes as a surprise after the two sides passed Mayfield’s self-imposed training camp deadline for a deal to get done, leading to the veteran QB to say he felt “disrespected” by the Bucs’ proposals.
Roughly six weeks time, however, was enough to bridge whatever gap existed in contract talks, and Mayfield now will make $55 million per year on a new deal struck on the eve of the 2026 season.
49ers lose another key contributor to a season-ending injury | Niners Nation
The San Francisco 49ers have another season-ending injury that happened before their season has even started. Defensive tackle Alfred Collins showed up on the injury report this week, and Kyle Shanahan later said it’s a torn patellar tendon suffered Monday. Collins will now be out for the season.
This marks another season-ending injury before the season has even started.
This certainly doesn’t bode well for the 49ers’ injury concerns and for Collins, who had flashes in 2025 but needed to get some consistency going in his second season as a pro.

“He’s doing a great job,” McVay said. “I think he’ll be ready to go sooner rather than later, but we’re making a decision that we think is best for him and for our team. … He’s attacked this the right way, but it would have been a really quick turnaround.”
McVay also said defensive end Myles Garrett, who has been dealing with swelling in his knee, will be “ready to go” in Week 1. Garrett, however, did not practice Tuesday, the team said on its official injury report.
“He’s looked great,” McVay said. “We’ve been smart with Myles, like I’ve kind of told you guys, but his impact has been tremendous.”

But the bottom line is both options are first-year players, rookies. The rise of Benson as the potential right tackle has not inspired a lot of confidence about Moore, either.
There was a lot of conversation this offseason about the Chiefs potentially needing to bolster the offensive tackle position. General manager Brett Veach and the front office did not add to that group in free agency, the draft, or the wave of undrafted free agents to close out draft weekend.
Benson, signed after tryouts in rookie minicamp, is one of the Chiefs’ “best five guys” right now after one injury. It remains to be seen if that makes the front office look smart or foolish.
