Spain are just one win away from their second World Cup title as they prepare for Sunday’s final against Argentina, and one player who has undoubtedly played a big part in La Roja’s success so far is Dani Olmo.
The Barcelona number 10 didn’t begin the tournament as a starter but quickly won Luis de la Fuente’s confidence and has been a fixture of the lineup since then, and played a brilliant all-around game in the semi-final against France.
Olmo’s numbers haven’t been spectacular — he has only two
assists in seven matches — but his impact has been notable: Dani’s ability to move into space and make plays in the final third with his dribbling and key passes are crucial to Spain’s attack, and his performances have been widely praised with German newspaper Kicker naming Olmo as the single most underrated player in the World Cup.
It’s a big claim but it certainly makes you think, especially since many of the headlines of Spain’s run to the Final have been about the defense led by Pau Cubarsí, Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella, Olmo’s midfield partner Rodri, and his Barça teammate Lamine Yamal.
