The exact nature and timeline for Ashton Jeanty’s recovery from a Sunday practice injury will still develop, however, it appears the Las Vegas Raiders’ standout second-year starting running back has avoided a major injury.
ESPN reported Sunday night that it appears Jeanty has a sprained ankle and it is not considered to be a long-term injury. That was refreshing news because there was major concerns when the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 draft went down diving for a pass Sunday afternoon. He reportedly
couldn’t put weight on his right leg and the team was stunned, kneeling and praying in silence.
So, this news is really a best-case scenario.
There are remaining questions, though. The Raiders open the regular season in 20 days at home against the Miami Dolphins. Sprained ankles can take between 1-6 weeks to heal depending on severity. So, if Jeanty has a high-ankle sprain, it could linger into the season. The worst-case scenario is he misses 3-4 games. The season opener could be in jeopardy even if it is a moderate sprain.
If Jeanty isn’t ready to go for the opener, rookie Mike Washington will likely take the load with Dylan Laube and Dare Ogunbowale behind him. The team could add veteran, perhaps bringing back free agent Raheem Mostert.
But there is less urgency for help with Jeanty being out for the short term.
In the end, this could have been an offense-altering injury, but it seems like it will be just a temporary issue and that is a huge relief for Las Vegas.
