While we all hope Roma’s return to the Champions League will usher in a new era of free-wheeling spending on the transfer market, sustained success still requires significant building from within. Homegrown players are not only more cost-effective, but they also bring what we might call corporate knowledge: insight and investment in the club’s values. These combined factors foster a sense of identity and camaraderie, while freeing up funds to acquire the finishing pieces the club needs to achieve
its long-range goals.
We’ve seen this approach work over the years with players as varied as Francesco Totti and Alessandro Florenzi, while talents like Niccolò Pisilli will ensure that Roma’s identity remains intact. And thanks to his breakout campaign, we can now add Emmanuele Lulli to that list.
The 19-year-old wing-back just missed the cut in this summer’s U-23 countdown, but Lulli has been a hot name on prospect radars for the past couple of seasons. All Lulli needed was a manager willing to give him a chance to learn and grow on the job, one willing to ride the highs and lows that come with relying on teenage talents.
Enter Gian Piero Gasperini. Never one to shy away from relying on unproven players, Gasperini has thrown Lulli into the deep end this season, and Roma is reaping the rewards. With five appearances, including four starts in Roma’s first seven league matches, Lulli is flourishing under Gasperini’s tutelage, flashing an impressive blend of attacking prowess and defensive acumen.
Lulli reached his early-season peak last weekend, scoring his first professional goal in the Giallorossi’s 2-0 win at the Olimpico against Genoa. The 19-year-old Roman’s future is looking brighter by the day, so much so that the club is already making moves to ensure he remains in their warm embrace.
According to multiple Italian sources, Roma and Lulli’s reps are working on a new contract that will keep the Roman boy at the Olimpico for the foreseeable future. While nothing is official yet, rumors suggest Lulli will sign a new deal through 2031, ensuring his best days (if not his entire career) are spent in giallo e rosso.
