Football’s greatest superstars have taken center stage at World Cup 2026, with the biggest names in the game stepping up to the plate and showing exactly why they are the very best in the business.
The race for the Golden Boot – awarded to the World Cup’s top scorer – currently reads like a Who’s Who of the world’s best players. Lionel Messi leads the way from Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane. Current Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele can only manage fourth place on the list.
The biggest
name of all, Messi, may have celebrated his 39th birthday during the tournament but is proving once again that age is very much still a number.
Messi started off with a hat-trick in Argentina’s opener against Algeria and has gone on to bang in five more goals for the defending champions. He’s also managed to miss two penalties along the way, proving that he is human after all. The Inter Miami star has already won everything the game has to offer but continues to demonstrate his other-worldly talent on the biggest stage of all.
Just behind Messi at the top of the scoring charts is Kylian Mbappe. The Real Madrid superstar is part of a star-studded French squad but looks in the mood to avenge 2022’s final defeat to Argentina. Mbappe has been lethal in front of goal and still popped up with two assists in the one game where he didn’t manage to find the back of the net.
And don’t forget Norway goal machine Erling Haaland. The striker also has seven goals on his World Cup debut, continuing the monstrous form he’s shown in the Premier League with Manchester City to set up an epic quarter-final tie with England.
The Three Lions will be led by inspirational duo Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham who sent Thomas Tuchel’s side past Mexico in an epic encounter. Kane has six goals in the tournament so far to remain in the hunt for the second World Cup Golden Boot of his career but Bellingham is just as vital to England’s hopes.
Elsewhere, there is plenty of other talent rising to the very top of the game. Michael Olise has followed up a stellar season with Bayern Munich by becoming France’s chief creator. Olise tops the assists charts and is the first player to hit five at a World Cup since 1994.
Lamine Yamal is also into the quarter-finals with Spain and eyeing a first World Cup title at the tender age of 18. The Barcelona superstar returned from injury at the start tournament, scoring 11 minutes into his first ever World Cup start and helping send Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal packing in the last 16 last time out.
World Cup finals are often characterised by unlikely heroes and 2026 has seen its fair share, with debutants Cape Verde capturing the imagination with a heroic performance that ultimately ended in a heartbreaking defeat to Argentina in the last 32.
Yet as we head towards the business end of the tournament, it’s the giants of the game who remain in contention, primed for glory and aiming to cement their legacies by picking the ultimate prize in world football.
