Earlier this week, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles was asked about a possible contract extension for right tackle Darnell Wright.
“I think there’s a window to get a deal done. and then at some point we got to go play football, Poles said at his press conference. “So we’ll figure that part out, but obviously, I think I’ve said it before, Darnell’s a guy we want here long term. It takes two sides to get things done, but at the end of the day, I don’t want any distractions or anything like that,
so when it’s time to go play football, we’ll go play football and keep it moving.”
His comments worried some, especially the “takes two sides to get things done” remark, but I just took it as canned GM-speak. That’s one of those cliches said during a negotiation.
Poles capped his answer with a, “But yeah, he’s a guy we would like here for a while,” which is what he’s said before, too, and coupled with today’s comments from Wright, it appears it’s just a matter of time.
At his post-practice presser today, Wright was asked how he’s handling the contract talk, and he said, “My main focus really is just football, being as best I can be for the team. Obviously, I know I’ll be here for a long time, hopefully my whole career. So those things kind of handle themselves.”
When asked if he’d prefer an extension to get done sooner rather than later, Wright said, “I mean, I’ll be on the Bears for a long time. So it doesn’t really matter to me.”
He went on to say his representation is handling the business, and it’s his job to play football.
Wright, who turns 25 in August, isn’t going anywhere.
