Morning all!
Yesterday we got word that second baseman Zack Gelof has successfully undergone shoulder surgery, beginning his recovery and preparing to hopefully come back strong in the spring:
It’s a tough way to see any player’s season end but it’s especially tough for Gelof, who has battled injuries pretty much all season. First the broken bone in his hand that cost him the first couple
months of the season, then the setback when a stress reaction in his ribs cost him even more time.
After finally making it back to the big league squad in August Gelof just didn’t look comfortable and got demoted to the minors, where he spent over a month before getting recalled at the end of August. He still hasn’t looked right in the batters box since his recall, going just 14-for-67 (.209 batting average), though on the bright side he did hit a pair of home runs.
Where things go from here is anyone’s guess. Once considered a top prospect in the organization Gelof has failed to live up to the hype he brought when he first joined the A’s a couple of years ago. This was more or less a lost season for Gelof and now the shoulder surgery is going to weigh on everyone’s minds all offseason. There isn’t any timetable for his recovery and club can afford to be patient with him and his rehab but the club would like to see some production sooner than later, and you can be certain the club is going to bring in some second base reinforcements this offseason.
So, is there anyone you’d like the A’s to try to pick up this offseason? Comment below! And have a good day everyone!
