Kylian Mbappé did what he failed to do in La Liga in the 2025/26 season and scored a hat-trick to secure Real Madrid a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad in the first league game to be played at the Bernabéu this season.
11 – Games unbeaten at the Bernabéu for José Mourinho, with a 4,835 day break
Nearly 5,000 days after he last stood on the touchline of the Bernabéu, José Mourinho returned. Mourinho’s last game at the Bernabéu, when the stadium looked very different, was a 4-2 win over Osasuna on June 1st, 2013, with José Callejón scoring the last goal of his first reign. It was a 10th
successive win at the Bernabéu, beating Málaga, Real Valladolid, Borussia Dortmund, Real Betis, Levante, Galatasaray, Real Mallorca and Barcelona in the process. The last time Mourinho failed to win at the Bernabéu in the Real Madrid dugout was a 1-1 draw with Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in the first leg last 16 of the UEFA Champions League on February 13th, 2013.
10 – Unbeaten for Real Madrid, without a win for Real Sociedad
Despite the struggles of last season, it ended strongly with a run of eight games without defeat, and Real Madrid have started this season in the same way, with two wins to extend the unbeaten run in La Liga to 10 matches for Los Blancos. However, context matters. Real Sociedad are a strong side, but are in a poor run of form. Their only win since April 4th was a penalty shoot-out win over Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, and a 1-0 loss to Real Betis at the weekend to start the season was their ninth game in a row without a win in the league.
10 – Goals against Real Sociedad for Kylian Mbappé
By opening his account for the season with a hat-trick, Kylian Mbappé added three more goals to the count against one of his favourite opponents in Spain. In doing so, he has taken only 24 shots against La Real, meaning his conversion rate against the Basque side sits at an astonishing 42% with more than two in every five attempts leading to a goal. His overall tally of nine is second only to Barcelona, against whom he has scored 12 goals. Perhaps more importantly, it also marks 89 goals for Real Madrid, putting him into the top 25 all-time goalscorers for the club and surpassing Luis Regueiro from the early 1930s.
2 – Assists for Jude Bellingham, to Mbappé and Vini in the same game for the first time
With much talk in recent weeks surrounding how Mourinho will get the most out of his three superstar attackers, seeing one assist the other two in the first home game of the season will send the coach home happy. The England international only recorded four assists in the league last season and is already at half that number, recording two assists in the same game since he did so twice in three days in January 2025. It’s the fourth time he has achieved the feat for Real Madrid and the first to his superstar teammates in the same game.
1st – Real Madrid’s position in the league table after two games
For the first time since 28th November 2025, Real Madrid go to sleep as the leaders of La Liga. It comes after only two games, with Los Blancos narrowly ahead of Sevilla and Real Betis on goal difference as the only three sides to have one both of their games played to date. Barcelona could overtake them, but only by beating Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou on Thursday night.
51-49 – The possession split
While the scoreline and the flow of the game point towards total dominance from Real Madrid, in true Mourinho fashion, the game was more about being lethal in possession rather than dominating the ball. Real Madrid had only 2% more possession than their rivals and recorded just 30 more completed passes (531 vs 501), but produced double the number of shots (20 vs 10) and more than three times the number of touches in the opposition box (46 vs 15). It wasn’t about how much of the ball Real Madrid had, but what they did with it that counted.
