For the 10th consecutive week, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at the University of Michigan are ranked in the top-10 of the Associated Press Poll. The men’s team stood pat at No. 3, behind Arizona at No. 1 and UConn at No. 2, while the women’s team fell from No. 7 to No. 9.
The men’s team had a decent week by beating both Indiana and Ohio State at home. Michigan also ranks No. 2 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, No. 2 on KenPom, No. 1 on Bart Torvik, and No. 1 on EvanMiya.com. Bracket Matrix,
a site that gathers all bracket projections across the country, has Michigan as a 1-seed along with Arizona, Duke and UConn.
It’s a big week ahead for the Wolverines, who have two top-10 matchups. Michigan has the chance to hand No. 5 Nebraska its first loss of the season (Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. on Peacock) before heading to East Lansing to take on Tom Izzo and the No. 7 Michigan State Spartans (Friday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. on FOX).
The women’s team is ranked in the top-10 for the 10th week in a row, staying between No. 6 and No. 9 since Week 2. The Wolverines are ranked third in the Big Ten behind UCLA (No. 2, 19-1) and Iowa (No. 8, 18-2).
The women’s team played three games this week and won two of them. In a top-1o match-up against Vanderbilt, Michigan fell just short of pulling off a comeback and lost by three points. Michigan bounced back with wins against Rutgers and USC, the former of which being head coach Kim Barnes Arico’s 300th career win. I highly recommend reading my colleague Taylor Daniels, as her recaps from these games have provided a lot of insight into one of the best teams Barnes Arico has had.
Michigan is ranked sixth in the country in the NET rankings with a 4-3 record in Quad 1 games and a 13-0 record in Quad 2-4 games. ESPN’s Charlie Creme and CBS Sports’ Connor Groel have Michigan as a 3-seed. Notably, if the Wolverines get a top-four seed, they would get to host Round of 64 and Round of 32 games.
Michigan has two road games this week. Michigan heads to Bloomington to take on Indiana on Thursday, Jan. 29 (7 p.m. on Peacock) and then head to East Lansing to take on the No. 13 Michigan State Spartans on Sunday, Feb. 1 (noon on FS1).
It’s wild we’ve already entered Week 13, and we are more than halfway through college basketball’s regular season. Thanks for following along and for continuing to read Maize n Brew, the best place for free Michigan content on the internet.
