The eye pokes suffered by Tom Aspinall at UFC 321 remains a touchy subject around the mixed martial arts (MMA) community, but at least the reigning UFC heavyweight champion was able to have some fun with
it on Halloween.
It’s been one week since Aspinall met Ciryl Gane for the undisputed UFC heavyweight title atop UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and fight fans are still being consumed by it. That’s because Aspinall was poked in both eyes by Gane and was unable to continue. The main event title fight was ruled a No Contest after just a few minutes of action and now we’re all experiencing the fallout.
While Gane is the one who landed the fight-ending eye pokes, it’s actually Aspinall who is catching the most heat. Many thought he should have toughened up and continued to fight even though he still can’t completely see. Some fighters are trying to support Aspinall and let him know to block out the naysayers, but those sentiments are far and few between compared to the rest. It’s been hectic for Aspinall, to say the least.
On Friday, Aspinall finally had some fun with the situation and took to social media to show off his eye patch for Halloween. In addition, Aspinall shared a fake photo of Gane dressed up as Freddy Krueger, suggesting the UFC heavyweight contender was ready to poke more eyes with his Krueger claws. It was pretty funny and good to see considering the negative backlash Aspinall has received over the past week.
Maybe he’s actually taking Belal Muhammad’s advice.
