What is the story about?

Newcastle United’s dramatic summer departures will not represent the end of the club’s willingness to cash in on important first-team players as it attempts to build a sustainable transfer model.

Sporting director Ross Wilson recently confirmed that Newcastle will continue trading players, acknowledging that Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes will not necessarily be the last major names to leave.

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has now identified Lewis Hall, Malick Thiaw and Tino Livramento

as the three players who will attract the most interest over the next 12 months, although Newcastle’s European qualification will have a major influence on whether sales are necessary.

Waugh stressed that Champions League qualification would transform Newcastle’s financial position and could allow the club to retain more of its squad. Missing Europe again — or qualifying only for the Conference League — could create a different situation.

Despite signing his new contract through 2031, Hall remains one of Newcastle’s most valuable potential sales. “Lewis Hall remains one of Newcastle’s most saleable assets,” Waugh wrote.

The 22-year-old’s extension, however, contains no release clause and puts Newcastle in a much stronger negotiating position in case Manchester United or any other giant comes calling.

“Beyond Hall, Malick Thiaw is already being linked with the legacy ‘Big Six’ clubs and I could see interest in the German next year,” Waugh wrote.

Tino Livramento represents another potentially valuable asset, particularly if the defender can remain healthy and return to his previous level. Livramento looked like a lock to depart this summer, but his pre-World Cup injury left those plans on pause.

Waugh warned that even a new Livramento contract would not necessarily eliminate the possibility of a future sale, with the same considerations applying as they do to Hall.
