The Dallas Cowboys need help in the secondary. This was the case well before the season ever began, but injuries are complicating matters even more.
Dallas is in sore need of any kind of help on the back end of their defense, and as a result they are being connected to a veteran who seemingly wants out of his current situation in Pittsburgh, cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
Original word began to circulate around this topic on Sunday morning. On Wednesday there was corroboration that Dallas is interested
by way of ESPN, but apparently not at any real serious level.

The Cowboys are trying to regroup on defense despite a slow start to the season and a rash of injuries to role players (see above). They held a Tuesday workout for veterans, and they also explored signing Eagles cornerback Kenny Moore II off that team’s practice squad. (Philly conveniently elevated Moore to the active roster that same day, possibly because the NFC East rival was sniffing around.) Dallas believes splash plays from star players are coming. The defense has two sacks, none from big-money players Quinnen Williams and Rashan Gary. The Week 4 opponent (Houston) could be right on time — C.J. Stroud has been sacked 10 times.
Also on the Dallas front, yes, the Cowboys have inquired about Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. But there was no movement as of Wednesday morning, and Dallas doesn’t seem eager to relinquish major capital to secure Porter just yet. (It owns just six picks in 2027, due to previous trades for key players.) Dallas believes it could use Porter as a prolific boundary corner. Porter has a trade market, but his desire for a new contract — and the rising costs of a position that’s now well above $30 million per year — complicates matters.
It goes without saying that the most significant detail surrounding any potential Porter trade is his desire for a new contract. The Cowboys do not exactly have the most illustrious history at handling those situations.
Even if they could handle it well though, Fowler brought up what might actually be the most important factor which is how few picks Dallas has in the 2027 NFL Draft. They do not have a ton of capital to play with, unfortunately.
Maybe they feel like it is still worth it to pursue Porter even in spite of this given their injury situation.
