Paris Saint-Germain star Vitinha hasn’t taken the traditional route to the very top of the game. The Portugal midfielder went from struggling on loan in the Premier League with Wolves to winning the Champions League with PSG in the space of just five years.
But even his time at PSG hasn’t always been easy. An introverted character, Vitinha struggled to make his mark in a team that contained global megastars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar and it took the arrival of Luis Enrique as coach to finally
unlock his prodigious talent.
The departure of the famous trio and Luis Enrique’s approach and desire to play a more possession-based game saw Vitinha go on to flourish and become a vital player for the French side, dictating games from midfield.
The change in style also saw PSG sweep the board in France, landing all the domestic trophies on offer and delivering PSG’s first ever Champions League title in 2025.
Vitinha’s performances saw him make a strong claim to be known as the best midfielder in the world as he finished third behind free scoring team-mate Ousmane Dembele and Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal at the 2025 Ballon d’Or awards.
The Metronome
Vitinha has been described as the “perfect midfielder” by manager Luis Enrique and it’s easy to see why his manager holds him in such high regard. He’s strong, doesn’t lose the ball, controls the tempo of the game in his pivot role and allows his team-mates to shine.
He also has a penchant for scoring goals from outside the box. His hat-trick against Tottenham in the Champions League in 2025 left then-Spurs manager Thomas Frank drooling. “Wow, what a player,” was the verdict from the Dane after seeing his team taken apart.
The midfielder has readily admitted he’s “not the tallest, the strongest or the fastest” but his technical ability, vision and understanding of the game have seen him establish himself as one of the very best players around.
Vitinha’s also shown that players with a smaller stature really shouldn’t be under-estimated. The 26-year-old only stands at 5 foot and 8 inches, just an inch taller than Lionel Messi, but regularly shines brighter than players with more athletic profiles in an increasingly physical game.
His rise with PSG has also been reflected on the international scene. Vitinha only played a bit-part role at World Cup 2022 but is now one of the first names on manager Roberto Martinez’s teamsheet.
Vitinha was one of Portugal’s standout players in their run to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 and played a key role in their 2025 Nations League triumph. There’s no doubt at all that he’ll be eyeing World Cup glory this summer in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
His Role in a Stacked Portugal Squad
The PSG maestro is part of a star-studded squad Portugal squad for the tournament, although Roberto Martinez’s side are not one of the hot favorites for the competition.
Yet a squad that contains the attacking power of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix, Rafael Leao and Bruno Fernandes may just take some stopping, especially with a class act like Vitinha pulling the strings in midfield.
Vitinha is expected to line up alongside club-mate João Neves and Manchester United’s Fernandes in midfield for Portugal at the World Cup. While 41-year-old global icon Ronaldo may take most of the headlines for Portugal in the build-up, teams would be advised not to overlook the contribution Vitinha makes for the national side.
Martinez will use his midfield metronome Vitinha to conduct his team’s play from the base of midfield for Portugal, and he looks absolutely ready to show the world once again why he’s considered one of the best midfielders on the planet.
