Minnesota Vikings training camp is two days in, and the J.J. McCarthy vs. Kyler Murray quarterback competition is already generating must-watch storylines. The Quarterback Competition: Context Over Completions
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has been clear: this competition will be thorough, but not a rigid 50/50 snap split. As Forness explained, “It’s not a exact
science, as O’Connell says. You wanna get the information and you wanna find out how he’s going about things.” The Vikings are scheduling practices in blocks of four, giving coaches a richer sample before drawing conclusions.
The early theme for McCarthy? A noticeably higher completion percentage — but a significantly shorter average depth of target. Forness flagged it as a trend worth monitoring: “Over the course of the first two days, some of the themes of J.J. McCarthy have been he has a higher completion percentage, but he’s got a much lower depth of target.” Is McCarthy pressing, playing conservatively to win the job, or simply working within what the defense is giving him? The answer isn’t clear yet — but O’Connell’s offense rewards quarterbacks who take calculated risks. As Forness noted, “O’Connell wants you to make those throws, and he will live with a couple extra interceptions because it’s going to result in touchdowns, hence Sam Darnold in 2024.”
Murray, meanwhile, is showing the inconsistency expected of someone who received the Vikings playbook in March. He’s made some impressive downfield throws — including a deep corner to Dontae Fleming and a near-miss to Jordan Addison — but has also dealt with snap-exchange issues with Blake Brandel and Michael Jurgens. “He’s still kind of getting his bearings,” Forness said, calling it entirely normal for a quarterback learning a new system.
