Calvin Ramsay’s time as a Liverpool player has today, barring a near impossible reversal of some kind, come to an end with the 23-year-old Scottish right back joining St. Mirren on loan for the season. With his Liverpool contract set to expire in summer 2027, though, it’s a move that means he won’t be back.
At least barring a half-season so impressive in the Scottish league it forces Liverpool—who are, it should be noted, rather short of convincing options at the position—to consider a recall in January.
Short of that, it’s a whimper of an end to Ramsay’s time in Red, and an ending few imagined when he signed in 2022.
At the time, Liverpool paid £4.2M to bring him south from Aberdeen. It was a club record sale for the club, and given Ramsay was just 18 at the time and had played 28 first games it raised a few eyebrows—and raised a lot of expectations. Those expectations even seemed warranted in that first pre-season.
A string of serious injuries, though, including spinal issues he arrived at the club with and played those first games carrying and that required surgery shortly thereafter, proved the undoing of his career at Anfield. He subsequently headed out to Preston North End, Bolton, Wigan, and finally Kilmarnock on loan.
Each loan failed to see Ramsay back on track. Each loan seemed to be to a club slightly further down the pecking order than the last. Hopefully, joining St. Mirren for the season will give him a platform to at least rebuild his career to the point where he can be a mainstay for a club around that level. Fingers crossed.
