Throughout their history, the Atlanta Falcons have undergone several uniform changes, from their original black jerseys and iconic red helmets in 1966 to the more modern designs of recent years. Some looks have become beloved classics, while others have sparked plenty of debate among fans.
Whether it’s the classic red helmets, the black throwback jerseys, or the uniforms worn during some of the franchise’s most memorable seasons, each era has brought something unique to Atlanta’s identity.
With that
in mind, let’s take a look back at the complete history of the Falcons’ uniforms, how they’ve evolved over the years, and some of the memorable players and moments associated with each look.
1966-1970
The 1966 season marked the Atlanta Falcons’ inaugural year in the National Football League, and the team debuted with one of the more unique uniform combinations in the league. The original look featured black jerseys with white numbers outlined in red, white pants, and the now-iconic red helmets featuring the original Falcons logo. The away uniforms featured white jerseys with black numbers, while both combinations included distinctive red and black striping. It’s a classic look that remains a favorite among Falcons fans to this day.
One particularly interesting detail was the addition of two thin gold stripes on the helmets. As the story goes, the Falcons’ original uniforms looked a little too similar to those worn by the University of Georgia, which didn’t exactly sit well with their rivals at Georgia Tech. To keep everyone happy, the Falcons incorporated gold into the helmet striping as a nod to Georgia Tech, while maintaining the red and black associated with Georgia. The gold stripes remained through the 1969 season before being removed in 1970.
The uniforms also underwent a few minor adjustments in 1968, including the removal of the Falcons logo from the jersey sleeves in favor of additional striping. Otherwise, the original design remained largely unchanged throughout the franchise’s first five seasons.
Some of the most recognizable players to wear these uniforms included legendary linebacker Tommy Nobis, the Falcons’ first-ever draft pick, and Hall of Fame defensive end Claude Humphrey.
Although Atlanta struggled to find success on the field during its early years, these uniforms established the franchise’s identity. Decades later, the Falcons would bring back this classic combination as a throwback in 2009, proving that sometimes the original look is still one of the best.
1971-1977
The 1971 season brought the first major change to the Falcons’ uniforms, as the team ditched its original black home jerseys in favor of red. The new look featured red jerseys with white numbers outlined in black, along with updated sleeve striping and red socks. The Falcons kept their iconic red helmets and white pants, creating a simple yet classic look that would help define the franchise throughout the 1970s.
Although the switch from black to red was significant, the overall design remained relatively unchanged during this era. In fact, red would remain the Falcons’ primary home jersey color all the way through the 1989 season, making it one of the longest-lasting traditions in franchise history.
Notable players who wore these uniforms included quarterback Steve Bartkowski, wide receiver Alfred Jenkins, and defensive end Claude Humphrey. While the Falcons didn’t experience much postseason success during this period, these uniforms helped establish the red-and-black identity that fans still associate with the franchise today.
1978-1989
In 1978, the Falcons introduced another significant change to their uniforms, replacing their traditional white pants with silver ones. Personally, I’ve always liked the addition of silver, which became a staple of the Falcons’ color scheme through the 2002 season. The jerseys also received some updates, including more detailed collar and sleeve striping, the return of the Falcons logo to the sleeves, and a switch from black to red numbers on the white road jerseys.
Another notable change came in 1984, when the Falcons switched from white facemasks to black, a look that would remain part of the team’s identity for decades to come.
This era is perhaps best remembered by longtime Falcons fans for the team’s success during the 1980 season. Led by quarterback Steve Bartkowski, Atlanta finished 12–4, capturing its first division title and setting a franchise record for wins at the time. Other notable Falcons who wore these uniforms included running back Gerald Riggs and wide receiver Alfred Jenkins.
Although the team experienced its share of ups and downs throughout the 1980s, the combination of red jerseys, silver pants, and red helmets remains one of the more classic looks in Falcons history.
1990-1996
As the Falcons entered the 1990s, they decided it was time for a bold new look. The team brought back black jerseys as its primary home uniforms, but this time with a major twist: black helmets. For the first time in franchise history, Atlanta ditched its iconic red helmets in favor of an all-black look, signaling a new era for the franchise.
Red was almost entirely removed from the uniforms, appearing only as subtle accents around the numbers and along the stripes on the silver pants. The away uniforms also received a makeover, featuring black numbers and black socks to complement the new helmets. It was a simple, intimidating design that quickly became one of the most recognizable looks in Falcons history.
Of course, this era is also closely associated with one of the most electrifying players to ever wear a Falcons uniform: Deion “Prime Time” Sanders. Between Sanders’ unforgettable highlights and the team’s embrace of a new identity, these uniforms became synonymous with the Falcons of the early 1990s.
Although the design would undergo some minor changes in the years that followed, the introduction of the black helmet helped establish a look that would remain a defining part of the franchise’s identity for decades to come.
1997-2002
In 1997, the Falcons made some subtle improvements to their uniforms, bringing back a little more red to a look that had become predominantly black and white. While the home uniforms remained largely unchanged, the away jerseys once again featured red numbers, along with the return of red socks. It wasn’t a revolutionary redesign by any means, but the added red helped bring back some of the franchise’s original identity.
This era also featured some of the greatest moments in Falcons history up to that point. Most notably, the legendary 1998 “Dirty Birds” team, led by head coach Dan Reeves and running back Jamal Anderson, shocked the NFL by finishing 14–2 and advancing to the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl appearance. Although Atlanta ultimately fell to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII, that season remains one of the most memorable in team history.
The Falcons also made history during the 2002 playoffs, becoming the first visiting team to defeat the Green Bay Packers in a postseason game at Lambeau Field. Led by a young Michael Vick, Atlanta pulled off a stunning 27–7 victory, ending Green Bay’s previously perfect home playoff record.
Between the unforgettable Dirty Birds and Vick’s emergence as one of the NFL’s most exciting young quarterbacks, it’s safe to say these uniforms hold a special place in the hearts of many Falcons fans.
2003-2008
Ahead of the 2003 season, the Falcons underwent one of the most revolutionary changes in franchise history, completely redesigning their uniforms and, for the first time since their inception in 1966, introducing a new primary logo. The updated logo featured a sleeker, more aggressive-looking falcon, incorporating red and silver accents while resembling the letter “F.” The uniforms themselves also received a modern makeover, featuring a new number font, bold striping, and several different combinations.
For the first time in franchise history, the Falcons also introduced an alternate jersey, giving the team three options: black, red, and white. Initially, black remained the primary home jersey, with red serving as the alternate. However, in 2004, the Falcons reversed course, making red their primary home color and moving black to the alternate rotation.
The Falcons experimented with several combinations, including all-black uniforms and white jerseys paired with black pants. Personally, I think these were some of the cleanest combinations the franchise has ever worn. Unfortunately, the black pants disappeared following the 2008 season, bringing an end to one of the more underrated looks in Falcons history.
Of course, this era is also remembered for Michael Vick, whose electrifying playing style made him one of the most recognizable players in the NFL. For many fans, these uniforms will always be associated with Vick’s incredible highlights and the excitement surrounding the Falcons during the mid-2000s.
2009-2019
During the 2009 season, the Falcons went back to basics. While keeping their existing uniform design, the team ditched its black alternate jerseys in favor of a throwback inspired by the franchise’s inaugural 1966 uniforms. The throwbacks featured black jerseys, white pants, and the iconic red helmets with the original Falcons logo. Needless to say, these quickly became fan favorites.
Unfortunately, that look wouldn’t last long. In 2013, the NFL introduced its controversial “one-helmet rule,” which required teams to use the same helmet throughout the season as a precaution against concussions. This meant the Falcons could no longer wear their beloved red helmets, effectively shelving the throwbacks for several seasons. However, in 2016, the team brought them back with a slight modification: black helmets featuring the original Falcons logo instead of the traditional red ones. Although it wasn’t quite the same, it was certainly better than nothing.
The 2016 season also brought another interesting addition to the Falcons’ uniform history. The NFL expanded its “Color Rush” initiative, which featured specially designed, predominantly single-color uniforms for teams to wear during Thursday Night Football games. Atlanta unveiled an all-red combination that was originally expected to debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that season. However, because both teams had red Color Rush uniforms, the Falcons were unable to wear theirs.
Instead, Atlanta finally debuted its all-red uniforms against the division-rival New Orleans Saints in 2017, a game the Falcons won 20–17. This would ultimately be the only time the team wore the combination. In 2018, the NFL discontinued the mandatory Color Rush program, although teams were still permitted to wear their Color Rush uniforms as alternates. Several teams continued doing so, but the Falcons weren’t among them.
Overall, the 2009–2019 era holds a special place in Falcons history, and for good reason. During this stretch, Atlanta experienced some of its greatest success as a franchise, including multiple playoff appearances, three NFC South titles, an NFC Championship, and a trip to Super Bowl LI. It was also the era of some of the greatest players to ever wear a Falcons uniform, including Matt Ryan and Julio Jones.
For many fans, these uniforms became synonymous with the most successful period in franchise history. Whether it was the iconic red jerseys worn during the team’s Super Bowl run or the classic black throwbacks, this era featured some of the most memorable looks and moments the franchise has ever produced.
2020-2025
In 2020, the Falcons underwent their first comprehensive uniform redesign since 2003, introducing a more modern look with several different combinations for their home and away uniforms. The redesign featured an enlarged helmet logo, a switch from black facemasks to silver, a new number font, and distinctive stripes running down the sides of the jerseys and pants. The team also returned to black as its primary home jersey color, while introducing black numbers on its white road jerseys in place of red. Personally, I think the black numbers were one of the best elements of the redesign, as they complemented the black helmets particularly well.
However, the new striping created some interesting complications. As you can see above, the Falcons originally unveiled red pants as part of their new uniform collection. The problem? Unlike the black and white pants, which featured red stripes to match the jerseys, the red pants featured black stripes. Since none of the jerseys had matching black stripes, the red pants didn’t exactly fit with the rest of the collection. Needless to say, the Falcons never actually wore them during a game.
The Falcons also introduced a rather controversial alternate uniform: the infamous red-to-black gradient jerseys. These featured a red upper half that gradually faded into black toward the waist, paired with black pants and the team’s black helmet. It was certainly a unique look, although whether it was a good look is another conversation entirely. The team wore these uniforms just three times: against the Detroit Lions (2020), New York Jets (2021), and Chicago Bears (2022). Ahead of the 2023 season, then-head coach Arthur Smith announced that the gradient jerseys would be shelved in favor of something much more familiar and beloved by fans: the classic red-helmet throwbacks.
Now, if you’re thinking, “Wait a second, didn’t you say earlier that the NFL had a one-helmet rule?” — you’d be correct. However, in 2021, the league announced that it would eliminate that restriction beginning with the 2022 season, allowing teams to introduce a second helmet for alternate and throwback uniforms. This opened the door for the Falcons to bring back their iconic red helmets, which hadn’t been worn since the 2012 season.
The red helmets officially returned in 2022, paired with the team’s classic black throwback jerseys and white pants. Beginning in 2023, the Falcons leaned further into that popular combination, choosing to wear the throwbacks more frequently rather than bringing back the gradient jerseys.
Overall, I’d argue that the 2020–2025 uniforms were among the least popular in franchise history. They were certainly a gamble, especially considering the previous uniform era had been the most successful in team history. Unfortunately, the Falcons never managed to build much success in their new look. Throughout these six seasons, Atlanta failed to make a single playoff appearance and never finished a season with more than eight wins.

2026-present
After six seasons with their controversial modern uniforms, the Falcons decided it was time for another change. On April 2, 2026, the Falcons officially unveiled a completely redesigned uniform set, returning to a more traditional look inspired by the franchise’s history. Perhaps the biggest change was the return of red as the team’s primary home jersey color, something that hadn’t been the case since the 2019 season.
Unlike the previous uniforms, which featured oversized “ATL” lettering, unusual number fonts, and bold side striping, the new design takes a much simpler approach. The home jerseys are once again red with white numbers, while the away jerseys returned to having red numbers. The Falcons also introduced a more traditional number font, with subtle angles inspired by the team’s logo. The oversized “ATL” lettering is gone, replaced by smaller “FALCONS” lettering on the home jerseys and “ATLANTA” on the away jerseys. The team’s logo also returns to a more prominent position on the sleeves.
Another interesting addition is the increased use of silver, a color that has been part of the Falcons’ identity for decades. The new pants feature stripes combining silver, white, black, and red, inspired by the franchise’s original 1966 uniforms. Both white and black pants are available, giving the Falcons several combinations to choose from throughout the season.
The helmets also received a few subtle updates. Atlanta retained its black helmets and modern Falcons logo, but introduced a low-gloss finish and a more traditional silver facemask. It’s not a drastic change, but the adjustments help tie the entire uniform together. Of course, one question many fans had leading up to the unveiling was whether the Falcons would keep the red-helmet throwbacks in the rotation. Thankfully, the team confirmed that the classic 1966-inspired throwbacks would remain.
Overall, I think the 2026 redesign is a significant improvement over the previous uniforms. The Falcons managed to combine elements of their past with a cleaner, more modern look without trying to reinvent the wheel. The return of red jerseys is especially welcome, and the simpler design feels like something that could stand the test of time.
Whether these uniforms become as iconic as some of the franchise’s previous looks remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the Falcons have returned to a more traditional identity, and hopefully, this new era brings some much-needed success on the field as well.
Personally, I’m hoping the Falcons eventually add a black alternate jersey to the mix. And if I’m not getting too greedy, I’d love to see the return of silver pants to complement the silver facemasks. That would really complete the look, in my opinion.
