Tony Elliott took the podium for his weekly press conference mid-day Tuesday, delivering some tough news to Cavalier fans that Kam Robinson, who injured his knee two weeks ago early in the win over Duke, will miss Saturday night’s game against Virginia Tech and the rest of the season with a torn ACL.
Robinson was hampered with a collarbone injury at the beginning of the season, causing him
to miss the first three games of his junior campaign. In his eight appearances, Robinson was a menace; playing himself into the ACC Defensive Player of the Year conversation with 64 tackles and two sacks to go along with two interceptions for touchdowns and a blocked punt. Few players have been as impactful to their teams in the ACC, with the Virginia-native racking up three ACC Linebacker of the Week awards throughout the year, the most of any Cavalier linebacker in program history. Robinson was also named a semifinalist for the Butkus Award, given to the top linebacker in the country.
The ‘Hoos now look to Landon Danley, who filled in to start the year and did so against Duke, and Maddox Marcellus to fill in the second linebacker spot next to James Jackson. Danley tied for a team-high six tackles against the Blue Devils and owns 34 tackles on the year, while Marcellus has seen snaps in every game this season, stacking 33 tackles to go with one total sack. Marcellus has also registered four or more total tackles in six of UVA’s 11 games throughout his first season in Charlottesville.
Despite the loss of Robinson, there is some good news on the injury front. Elliott said he expects both Kevin Wigenton II and Ben York to be available on the offensive line for Saturday night. Other updates included Jayden Thomas, who Elliott said is “Still probably going to be another week,” until he can return, in addition to running back Noah Vaughn, who remains out this week with an ankle injury suffered against William & Mary in the early part of the year.
