Andrew Painter made his second minor league start this weekend with the IronPigs, giving them six innings of one run ball, striking out six and making a good impression in the box score. However, dig a bit deeper and there were some things that haven’t really improved. He still isn’t getting many swings and misses against minor leaguers, one of his biggest issues when he was making major league starts. The shape on his fastball still isn’t all that great, his breaking stuff is still kind of meh,
making me wonder this question.
How many more starts do you think Painter makes in the major leagues this season?
If he’s continuing to be just decent at the minor league level, not swinging the pendulum towards dominant a little more often and just being alright, does the team just continue moving forward with a bulk innings guy in Alan Rangel, do they acquire someone different from the trade market or do they just drop Painter back in to the rotation and hope for the best? There are a lot of moving parts here.
