This is not Tottenham Hotspur news, but it is HUGE news in the world of Premier League football. According to a breaking news article in The Athletic/New York Times, Manchester City has been found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges related to “breaches of the Premier League’s finance regulations” between 2009-2018
This would seemingly bring to a close an eight year investigation into City routinely and repeatedly violating Financial Fair Play regulations that has languished with Premier League adjudicators, leading some to wonder if a decision would ever be made. The initial accusations of Manchester City were released by German newspaper Der Spiegel after substantial investigative reporting. City being found guilty of charges is a massive, massive story that could have seismic implications for the Premier League in the future.
According to David Ornstein, who wrote the article, sanctions have yet to be determined (which is a pretty huge part of this whole process) and that Manchester City plan to appeal. Potential sanctions could range from a reprimand and fines to points deductions, or even City being kicked out of the Premier League altogether.
There will be a lot of discussion about this, and more information is surely going to come over the next few days. It’s not known how long the appears process will take, or whether sanctions for City’s financial malfeasance. But what was already a huge story has now exploded with the force of a thermonuclear weapon.
