Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has been talking about Lionel Messi, Anthony Gordon and Julian Alvarez as he prepares for Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde on Monday.
The defender spoke to Mundo Deportivo and was asked if he’d thought what it would be like to come up against Messi at the World Cup this summer.
“Yes, I imagined it. He’s been my idol since childhood,” he said.
“I’ve never been able to see him in person, or on the field. I would have preferred to play with him on my team, but
if I have him in front of me, I’ll give it my all and try to defend him as best I can.”
Cubarsi was also quizzed on Julian Alvarez amid continued speculation about his future.
“He’s a spectacular player, as I already said. We all know the quality he possesses,” he added.
“There are many rumors, as there are every summer, but I’m focusing on the ones we have now: Ferran and Gordon, who has just joined.”
And the Barcelona defender has some words of praise for Gordon, saying he knows him quite well after facing Newcastle last season in the Champions League.
“He’s very good. He’s a player I’ve watched quite a bit and studied because we’ve played against him this season,” he added.
“He’s a very versatile striker, who’s great at finding space… He’s a player committed to the team, and I really like that.”
