Roma’s victory over Como on Monday may have halted a two-match losing streak in Serie A, but the Giallorossi’s 1-0 win over Cesc Fabregas’s side was hardly an attacking masterclass. Thanks to Wesley’s somewhat controversial 60th-minute goal, with a Como player injured on the pitch, Roma eked out another narrow victory, lifting Gasperini’s group into fourth place—three points behind league-leading Inter Milan and four ahead of this weekend’s opponent, Juventus.
Despite the win, it was hard to ignore
Roma’s inability to break down Como’s defense, as they posted 1.1xG on Monday, roughly their season average—and therein lies the problem. With Matías Soulé and Wesley accounting for nearly 44% of their league goals this year, Roma is aching for a goalscorer in the worst way.
With Artem Dovbyk and Evan Ferguson’s days at Roma numbered (though Ferguson is showing signs of life lately), the rumor mill has focused its efforts on Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee. Despite his seeming glove-like fit with Gasperini, the pendulum has predictably swung the other way, with United likely to keep the Dutch forward.
Enter Giacomo Raspadori…again.
According to Alfredo Pedulla, Roma is in direct contact with Raspadori’s entourage and appears more likely than Lazio to lure the Atletico Madrid forward/midfielder back to Serie A. While Raspadori isn’t necessarily a goal-scorer, he could be a good fit with Zirkzee–a double swoop that Pedulla reports may be on the cards for Roma, particularly if Tommaso Baldanzi and Leon Bailey leave the club in January.
We’ll monitor these stories as they develop, but there’s no denying it: Roma needs these players.
