Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has described Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury
as a “tragic situation” and poured doubt on his ability to play at World Cup 2026.Ter Stegen underwent surgery on a hamstring tear in February and is currently sidelined. It’s not clear yet when he will be able to return to action.
The goalkeeper had been hoping to be No. 1 for Germany at World Cup 2026 but Nagelsmann admits that it’s going to be difficult for him
“It’s obviously an extremely tragic situation for Marc; it would
have been his turn now,” he told Kicker.
“That something so dramatic would come from such a simple action as a normal pass. Looking at his history with the national team, it would have been his turn now.
“The book isn’t completely closed, but there’s no doubt it’s going to be very tight, because we have to take into account not only the recent downtime, but also the previous period. He’s barely played for a year; that’s extremely little.”
Ter Stegen moved on loan to Girona in a bid to boost his World Cup hopes but the injury has come at the worst possible time.
He’s been back at Barca doing recovery work in the gym but we’ll have to wait and see when he is able to make his comeback.
