As Ryan Day noted earlier this week in his press conference, the off week is a chance for younger guys to continue getting reps and the more experienced players to take advantage of some time to focus
on their bodies. The program is using this last improvement week of the season to put themselves in the best position moving forward to make a real run at their ultimate goals.
Also a chance to keep recruiting, the Buckeyes have been as busy as ever when it comes to in-season efforts. Paying off in the form of commitments and early relationships being formed, it’s easy to see why the buzz surrounding Ohio State has been so positive as of late.
Five-star cornerback narrows it down
Most positions for Ohio State are this way, but the Buckeyes develop the cornerback spot among the best in the country, and that trend repeats itself because of the players Ohio State is able to recruit.
Every cycle the position remains a major priority, and Tim Walton has done a great job landing his guys and getting them right on the field as well. With this recipe for success continuing, it’s expected that the top players at the position in each recruiting class will keep the Buckeyes in their schools of interest.
On Wednesday, the top player nationally and best cornerback in the 2027 class per the 247Sports Composite, Texas Native John Meredith III, announced he is down to just 11 schools, and the Buckeyes made the cut. A player with well over 40 offers to his name, narrowing it down to 11 shows he is well on his way to making a final call.
Other schools still in the mix include Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Oregon, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and USC for the five-star talent. Being from Texas, it won’t be easy to pull him away. Still, what Ohio State has going on has to speak volumes, and to see the Buckeyes make his initial list is a great sign that they’re not only saying the right things, but also letting it translate on the field too.
A class difference maker in every aspect, this is a recruitment the Buckeyes will be in on for the long haul. Meredith does have plans to see Ohio State in person this fall, and if that trip does in fact take place, you can guarantee the staff will keep their name well in the mix for his services.

Speaking with Mick Walker of Letterman Row, Alston made it clear he is in contact with the staff often and looks to be a priority for James Laurinaitis.
A 6-foot-2, 210 pound athlete in the 2028 class, Alston has over 20 offers to his name and from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee, and Ohio State. Making a visit soon, here’s another name worth keeping tabs on moving forward.
