UNC will travel to Clemson to play the Tigers on Saturday in a game that could potentially have huge ramifications on each team’s respective coach. We’ve covered Bill Belichick’s tenure thus far at UNC pretty thoroughly here at Tar Heel Blog; needless to say, it’s been a bumpy year-plus for the UNC headman. Belichick entered this season with the over/under on UNC wins set at 4.5; while two early season wins may have muted the worst of the (on the field) criticism, he remains a coach that is feeling
the pressure to show improvement in year two of wearing the Carolina blue.
If you haven’t kept up with Clemson the past few years, you may be unaware of just how hot Dabo Swinney’s seat has gotten as head coach of the Tigers. Swinney has been famously stubborn at refusing to adapt to the modern realities of college football and has generally eschewed using the transfer portal until just recently. While that’s likely not the only issue facing Clemson, it’s drawn the most attention as a Clemson program that was among the nation’s best for several years continues its slide into mediocrity. Clemson finished the regular season last year with a record of 7-5 before losing to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl. It was the Tigers worst record since the 2010 season; and while a 7-5 record would be considered a decent year by UNC standards, it’s not nearly good enough at a program that has the expectations that exist at Clemson. Nor has the 2026 campaign started off well for Swinney’s team; they got obliterated by a LSU, 51-10, in their first game of the season. Last week, the team struggled to put away Georgia Southern and won a lackluster game 22-7.
So, our Question of the Day for today: which coach needs the win more? Personally, I think it’s Dabo & Co. A loss may well push Clemson into starting to plan for the post-Swinney era; while I would think that Swinney’s national championships will grant him a lot of grace, it feels like he’s about out of runway to get the program back to the heights it enjoyed in the 2010’s. Losing to a Belichick team widely seen as one of the ACC’s worst at home may be a tipping point.
Somewhat ironically, while a loss may hurt Swinney more, a win almost certainly helps Belichick more than it would the Clemson coach. A Clemson win probably just keeps the pot on “simmer” for another week or so before it inevitably boils over, while most UNC fans had written off this game at the start of the season. If UNC manages to pull out a win on the road — even against an obviously weakened Clemson team starting a freshman QB — the Heels will be 3-0 at a time most people expected them to be 1-2, likely fueling the “Belichick has got UNC on the right track” narrative that started in the wake of the TCU win.
