While the Cleveland Browns have certainly missed on several signings over the last decade, and really missed on at least one trade, several moves greatly surpassed the team’s expectations. Sometimes talent can be found in the most uncertain circumstances.
The Browns were in a desperate position in late November during the 2023 season. Following Deshaun Watson’s injury, the team needed someone to step in and fill in at quarterback. I don’t think anyone expected 38-year-old Flacco to come
in and have the type of impact that he did. He led Cleveland to a 4–1 record and helped the team clinch a playoff berth. He won Comeback Player of the Year for that season and really helped the team to find success in such a turbulent year.
Pocic joined the Browns on a very cheap one-year deal in 2022 to help with depth on the offensive line. Expectations were low; however, he was put into the starting lineup after center Nick Harris suffered an injury before the season even started. Pocic rose to the challenge, emerging as a consistent and dependable anchor on Cleveland’s offensive line. His play even earned him a three- year extension with the team.
The Browns signed Hunt during the offseason despite uncertainty over a possible suspension related to off-the-field conduct. It was a risky decision to bring Hunt into the organization when you already had a stable situation with Nick Chubb at running back. Hunt ended up being the perfect complement to Chubb, and the two had many years of success in the backfield together.
