Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos offense come to life in the fourth quarter.
We could call the offense late bloomers.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton wants to see Nix and his offense get off to a faster start.
Today, against a bad and beat-up Dallas Cowboys defense, is a good time to make that come to life.
“Let’s be honest, I think we want to start better,” Payton said to the local media on Friday after practice. “So whether time’s coming off the clock or it’s not, we have to work on our first half. I thought the point of emphasis this week with the whole group … they handled it well. You have to find a way to make Wednesdays like Sunday. Sometimes that’s challenging. That’s one of the things that you look at as a coach. Even after a big win, all right, there are a lot of things that need fixing.”
One way Nix and the offense could get off to a faster start today is to play with a little tempo. The second-year Broncos quarterback seems to play at his best when he’s in those situations.
So when Payton was asked if he speeds up the offense during practice, he said:
“I think more than any of that, if I felt it was tempo-driven. I think the attention to detail, the huddle, and those reps that we’re taking on Wednesday. How do we create more stress and urgency on Wednesday and Thursday, so that when Sunday comes … I think that’s important.”
Since the Broncos defense is in for a tough matchup against Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense today, Nix and the offense must do their part by starting fast and finishing drives with touchdowns.
“I think generally speaking, there are going to be plays made on both sides of the ball,” Payton said when asked about how intriguing the matchup is between his defense and the Dallas offense. “I’ve said this before, you have to pay attention as the game’s unfolding. Sometimes they unfold differently than you may think, but it’s a team.
“It’s a good team. You look at their record when the receivers are all healthy, and they’ve been real tough to defend. They’re coming off, obviously, a big win last week. So each team’s playing for a lot, and both are keeping pace in their division. It’s an important game for both teams.”
