Amid its 3-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich, FC Köln had a fleeting moment where it could at least dream of pulling off the unthinkable — taking down the league leaders.
In the 41st minute, Linton Maina dribbled from his own end of the field after an ill-advised shot attempt from Serge Gnabry was blocked. From that point, no one from the Bayern Munich midfield or backline could step in front of Maina, who took full advantage of the situation.
Maina ripped a shot that Manuel Neuer probably should
have saved and all of a sudden it was 1-0 in favor of the home team. While that lead would not last long, Maina said it did give his team a boost.
“It actually felt quite good. We’ll have to watch it again. It’s often the case against Bayern that you think you could’ve got more out of it. At the same time, you have to be honest and say that their individual quality is just outstanding. You have to be alert for 95 minutes,” Maina said as captured by FCBayern.com.
FC Köln gave its all, but a game-tying goal in the fifth minute of added time by Gnabry and second half goals from Kim Min-jae and Lennart Karl iced the match.
“We were in the game for a long time. We needed to make better use of one or two counter-attacks that we had. Overall we put up a good fight. It was a good atmosphere, we were pushed from front to back – even now at the end. We’ve lost 3-1 but the fans still recognized the fact we battled from the first minute to the last. And I think that’s what it’s about,” said Billy Goats goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe.
