Bayern Munich has looked one of the best sides in Europe so far this season, but it did make hard work of its 2-1 win at newly promoted SV Elversberg and was held to a 0-0 draw at Schalke. Loris Karius had a lot to do with that result, but unfortunately for Bayern, some of its direct Bundesliga rivals have been just as good as them results wise, if not better.
As things stand heading into the international break, despite a superior goal difference to anyone else in the league, Bayern sits in second
place behind Borussia Dortmund, who have won all four of their Bundesliga matches so far this season. Niko Kovac’s side is the only remaining team with a perfect record in the German top flight and they also won their first-round DFB-Pokal match and first Champions League match of the season, making it six wins on the bounce after losing to Bayern 2-1 in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
For what it is worth, despite being behind to Dortmund in the Bundesliga table, Bayern’s bosses are remaining confident and aren’t worried in the slightest. “You have to put things in perspective. We’ve scored 14 goals in four games and only conceded two. The 0-0 draw at Schalke – that can always happen. Even then, we were the dominant team. What’s crucial is the way the team plays, how exciting the football matches are. I’d almost say: It’s fantastic to watch. It’s really great. The most important thing is what happens at the end. Of course, we want to be in first place then,” club president Herbert Hainer explained during Bayern’s customary visit to the Wiesn at the Käfer (via @iMiaSanMia).
While Dortmund has been dealt with the unfortunate injury blow to new signing Giannis Konstantelias, Hainer has a point with his recognition that Karius had an amazing performance against Bayern in what was a rotated starting eleven from Vincent Kompany. At Elversberg, Bayern had seven shots on target and were perhaps a bit unlucky to only have scored twice.
CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen sees the current standings at something to be excited about and is looking at it from the angle of being able to chase Dortmund. “We’re completely relaxed about it, it’s wonderful. Everyone keeps writing that the league is boring, but I can’t see that at all. We’re Dortmund’s pursuers and we’ll certainly chase them down,” he stressed.
For Uli Hoeneß, a man who’s never been afraid to not bite his tongue and refrain from speaking his mind, he was a man of lesser words when he was asked about Bayern being two points behind Dortmund. After all, he was asked only two days after Bayern’s massive win over Union Berlin. “When you win 7-0, everything’s fine,” Bayern’s honorary president enthused.
