The Washington Spirit officially announced that they have transferred Mexico star and midfielder Rebeca Bernal to Manchester United W.F.C. of England’s Women’s Super League. The WSL is set to kick off its 2026-2027 campaign this week with Manchester United taking on the London City Lionesses.
Bernal joined the Spirit ahead of the 2025 NWSL season, and played over 3,000 NWSL regular season minutes, and accumulated 50 appearances across all competitions for the club.
“We’re appreciative of [Bernal’s]
valuable contributions to this club over the past year and a half,” said Sporting Director James Hocken. “She played a key role in helping the Spirit win last year’s Challenge Cup and make our second consecutive NWSL final. She has helped set the professional standard at the Spirit and we look forward to following her success in England.”
The Mexican captain was a consistent member of the Spirit starting XI primarily playing as a defensive midfielder, but has also featured as a center back throughout her career.
“I’m endlessly grateful to the Spirit organization and the DC fans who have welcomed me from day one and given me an amazing two seasons,” said Bernal. “I didn’t know what to expect coming here from Mexico and my time here has been filled with nothing but great memories, lasting friendships and some incredible wins at Rowdy Audi. Thank you to my teammates, coaches, staff and all our supporters who have made an impact on me. DC is a special place.”
The 29-year-old defender began her professional career in Mexico with C.F. Monterrey, helping the club become a powerhouse in the Mexican Women’s League. During her time there Bernal won four Liga MX Femenil titles and three other appearances in the championship final.
Bernal will make history as she becomes the first Mexican to ever play in England’s WSL. She will join Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez on the list of Mexican stars to have played for Manchester United on either the Men’s or Women’s team.
