LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers beat the Reds 10-2 on Tuesday night to take a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-3 wild card round, but a pair of players left the opener earlier while dealing with injuries. Tommy Edman was removed to manage his right ankle, and Kiké Hernández left later while dealing with back tightness.
Edman has been dealing with a right ankle sprain all season, and aggravated the injury last week. This was his first game in the field since last Wednesday. He even homered in the third inning,
giving the Dodgers a 5-0 lead at the time.
But he was out of the game on defense after five innings, replaced by Miguel Rojas at second base, with the lead at 6-0 at that point.
“It’s just the ankle. It’s something that’s going to be ongoing,” manager Dave Roberts said. “Whenever we can get him off it, to get him ready for the next day, that’s what we’re going to do.”
Hernández started in left field in Game 1, and had two singles in his three at-bats. He scored on Shohei Ohtani’s second home run of the game, in the sixth inning. But in the seventh inning, Hernández was pinch-hit for in the seventh inning by Alex Call.
“He’s playing tomorrow,” Roberts said emphatically of Hernández. “He had some back tightness. Just kind of trying to take care of it, getting him ready for tomorrow and beyond.”
