You may have heard the story about Michael Jordan going to a barbershop in Durham, only to see some Duke guys show up there. MJ told the barber basically, it’s us or them. You’re gonna have to choose.
Well, here’s the bookend to that story.
When he was at Duke, and in the NBA for that matter, Grant Hill developed a reputation as an elegant basketball player and a man of real dignity and gravitas. He would generally kick your butt, to be sure, but he was never going to rub your nose in it.
Well, not
usually, anyway.
In this clip, Hill tells a story about what he and some of his teammates did after beating Kansas in 1991 for Duke’s first NCAA championship.
A concert was scheduled in the Dean Dome for the weekend after the Blue Devils beat the Jayhawks, with the group Bell Biv DeVoe, Keith Sweat, and Johnny Gill performing. Those guys wanted to play Duke, and some of the Blue Devils said, fine, but if we win, you have to bring us on stage.
Sucker bet!
According to AI, after the champs came on stage, the Chapel Hill crowd turned on BBD, Sweat, and Gill for the rest of the show, which is hilarious. It might not have been so bad for Hill to go up there, but Brian Davis and, worst of all, Christian Laettner? On stage in the Dean Dome?
Hill says the best part was looking at Rick Fox, who had previously been brought on stage, and seeing him just seethe at being upstaged in his own arena.
And now you know the bookend story, so #23 can suck it.
