Quarterback Duke Carlisle led Texas football to its famed 1964 national championship glory. He was one of just four former Texas quarterbacks to have claimed the collegiate sport’s most sought after season-long accolade.
And while the Kaufman, Texas, native never managed to win individual awards beyond his Most Valuable Player Award following the Longhorns’ Cotton Bowl victory over Navy, which propelled Texas toward its claim of the championship that season (college football’s first playoff system,
the two-team BCS series, wouldn’t launch until more than three decades after the Longhorns championship-winning 1964 regular and postseason.
This past weekend, Carlisle’s family announced his death following a seven-year bout with cancer.
Carlisle was 84 years old, according to the Houston Chronicle.
