In a non-surprising development, Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer did not practice Wednesday as the team began preparations in earnest for Sunday’s home game against the Chicago Bears (kickoff
is set for 1:25 p.m. PT).
Mayer suffered a concussion on a scary hit on a special-teams play in the first half of the Raiders’ 41-24 loss at the Washington Commanders on Sunday. He has been in the NFL’s concussion protocol since and he must pass through the protocol before being cleared to play.
It is not unknown how far along Mayer is in his recovery timeline. But it would not be a surprise if he doesn’t play Sunday. The Raiders have Brock Bowers and Ian Thomas at tight end and could elevate either Albert Okwuegbunam or Carter Runyon from the practice squad if Mayer can’t play.
The second-round pick from Notre Dame played just five offensive snaps and three on special teams when he went out Sunday. Mayer, who had a strong Week 1 performance at New England, has six catches for 47 yards this season.
The Raiders will release their first injury update of the week later Wednesday and this post will be updated.
