What a weekend to be a Huskers fan! Both basketball teams won. Volleyball extended the sweep streak and the football team won with a true freshman at the helm. With a title about “two historic performances” and knowing the season the volleyball team is putting together, the first inclintation is to wonder which of those ladies made history. Instead, it is a running back and power forward that made a run at the record books.
Rienk Mast notched a triple double for Nebrasketball with 18 points, 12 rebounds
and 10 assists. Yes, you read that last stat correctly. Someone like Mast who plays power forward/center would usually be a candidate for the triple double by getting double digit blocks in addition to points and rebounds. He became only the third men’s basketball player in Husker history to get a triple double and he did it in an unconventional way, by dishing it to his teammates.
On the football front, TJ Lateef did everything Husker football fans hoped for, but let’s talk about Emmett Johnson for a moment. He is the first Husker back to gain 100 yards in both receiving and rushing. Given the long line of impressive Husker talent at that position, I am shocked that he is the first to do this. I am not shocked he did it – just surprised that none of the other impressive talent Nebraska has featured did it before this.
The clamor for him to be an All-American and to get an invite to New York for the Heisman ceremony is building. If he continues to run like he has, he deserves the hype. What do you think? Do you agree with Will Compton?
