One of football’s largest stories this year was Munich’s beloved superstar Thomas Müller leaving Bayern Munich after 25 years of playing for the Rekordmeister. While the exit was shrouded in controversy at the time, Müller looks back after a relatively successful stint at the Vancouver Whitecaps thus far.
“Despite my changed role at FC Bayern, I felt very comfortable; I truly enjoyed being part of the team and would have liked to stay. But looking back now, I can say that the adventure in Vancouver
probably gave me more emotionally as a footballer than a first half of the season with FC Bayern as a squad player would have,” said Müller, speaking to SZ (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
“I never really lost touch with the club; I still talk to some of the players on the phone or chat with club officials on WhatsApp. My departure was exactly how you’d imagine it in a romantic sense: it wasn’t just a matter of handing over the keys and being gone. All my farewell parties helped with that.”
Müller has adjusted very well to life in Canada, with 11 goal contributions in 12 MLS games. He also seemingly continues to cherish his connection with Bayern, which fans will certainly appreciate.
