WWE tried to get some hype on its Backlash premium live event back in May by promising John Cena had an announcement that would “shock the very foundation of WWE.” Reader, I assure you, it did not.
The big announcement turned out to be the unveiling of what he called “The John Cena Classic,” which is a future event that is going to feature, uh, well, something! Matches! A championship title! Possibly other stuff too, like fan voting!
It was clear right away that they were still workshopping ideas for
this thing when they went ahead with getting hype started for it. Every time anyone has asked for an update since then, it’s seemed just as clear that they are still doing workshopping. Now, Cena has told Extra that he’s going to withhold updates from here:
“I gotta withhold the updates. What I can tell you is we are working forward, and I cannot tell you how excited I am about it. The event, what it stands for, I want to do something great for WWE fans towards the end of the calendar year. Man, I wish I could give you spoilers but I got to be loyal to my company. What I can tell you is we’re working on it, and I am going to give you my absolute best. If an event is going to wear my name, especially in the WWE realm… I’ve always given my best to WWE. The Classic will be no less.”
So there you go. At least we can expect it to happen in 2026, toward the end of the year. Otherwise, we are out of luck on updates from here.
