Maryland women’s soccer came into its matchup against Navy riding high off a late comeback that forced a draw against Virginia Tech in the Terps’ last matchup.
After falling behind by two goals for the second straight game, lightning would not strike twice, as the Terps’ offense and defense simultaneously faltered. Those performances led to Maryland’s 2-0 defeat to Navy, its first loss of the season.
It did not take long for Navy to get its scoring started. In the seventh minute, Stella Jones found
some open space and fired the ball into the top corner to put the Midshipmen in front early.
The Terps had a chance to come right down and tie the game minutes later, but Natasha Stramrood made the save for her first of the game.
Stramrood proved she was up for the challenge against Maryland. She made six saves on the day and kept a clean sheet. Two of those saves came in huge chances for the Terps as Stramrood stuffed a one-on-one challenge from Abigail Stager in the ninth minute and doubled up to keep Mckinley Heaven off the scoresheet 12 minutes into the second half.
One of the few bright spots on the Terps’ attack was the aforementioned Stager, who created some of the best opportunities for Maryland throughout the entire game. Stager utilized open space to generate chances for teammates along with two shots of her own. However, her production did not result in any goals for the Terps.
While Stramrood anchored Navy’s backline, Maryland’s defense was sloppy early on. The Terps gave up space to operate and compounded those problems by fouling. The Terps committed five fouls in the first half alone, with multiple occurring in dangerous positions.
On one of those fouls, Navy took advantage. Kayana Adlam received a free kick from just outside the box and fired it past the outstretched reach of Faith Luckey for the Midshipmen’s second goal of the game in the 18th minute.
The momentum of the first half slowed down significantly after the two early goals. Neither offense had many opportunities in the latter half of the first 45 minutes.
Maryland tried to get its offense going with deep passes, but they were unable to connect, which led to turnovers and a lack of attacking possession.
When the Terps pushed the ball down the field in the second half, creating chances proved to be difficult.
Jolie Farmer, who had scored in each of the Terps’ first three matchups, couldn’t get anything going on offense. Farmer took just two shots in the contest, with neither requiring a save from Stramrood in net.
Without Farmer powering the offense, Maryland had six shots on goal, but only a select few were a true challenge for Stramrood.
Despite striking twice early on, Navy’s offense did not replicate its attacking pressure for the remainder of the game. The Midshipmen had just five shots in the second half.
Ultimately, the lack of offense from Navy following its electric start did not matter. Even though the Terps outshot Navy, two lightning-quick goals in 18 minutes of work were too much for Maryland to overcome.
Three things to know
- Maryland’s passing problems haunted them. The Terps have struggled with passing at times throughout the early part of the 2026 season, but no game was a bigger show of that than against Navy. Sloppy passes and unforced turnovers made it impossible for Maryland’s offense to find solid momentum and kept the defense on its heels all game.
- No Farmer, no offense. Four games into the Terps season and Farmer has still either scored or assisted on every goal for Maryland. When Farmer has off-days, the Terps need to find other players to create chances. While Stager looked like she could give some of that, more players will need to step up.
- Play with fire too much, and it will burn you. Maryland has made a habit of either keeping a game closer than it should be or digging itself a hole to fight out of. This time, the Terps did not have enough late-game magic to make up for their earlier mistakes. Head coach Michael Marchiano will likely expect cleaner and more consistent play if Maryland wants to get back in the win column.
