What is the story about?
It’s training camp across the NFL, and just like every August for the Seattle Seahawks that means churning the fringes of the roster to try and find hidden gems that may have slipped through the cracks elsewhere.
Specifically what that meant on Wednesday for Seattle was hosting a half dozen players for tryouts, including three tight ends and three wide receivers.
For those curious, a very high level overview of these players is as follows:
- Derek Anderson: 6’6”, 260 pounds. Primarily a blocking TE, caught 20 passes for 184 yards and a pair of touchdowns as a senior at Northern Iowa
- J.J. Galbreath: 6’4”, 231 points. Caught 93 passes for 1,355 yards and 12 touchdowns at the University of South Dakota. Signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2025, but was waived before the season. Spent some time with the practice squad during the regular season, but so no game action.
- Tyler Moore: 6’5”, 255 pounds. Primarily a blocking TE at Iowa State, Moore caught 21 passes on 45 targets for 245 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Cyclones.
- Julian Hicks: 6’2”, 201 pounds. Spent time at Central Michigan and Akron before finishing his college career at the University of Albany. Caught 72 passes for 1,139 yards and 17 touchdowns in his final two seasons of college football before signing with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2024 and has been on and off the roster, with a short stint on the practice squad at the end of the 2024 season.
- Ben Patterson: 6’5”, 220 pounds. Pulled in 98 passes for 1,774 yards and 16 touchdowns in four seasons at University of Texas Permian Basin. Ran a 4.45 40, but posted poor agility metrics. Signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars after going undrafted this past spring, but was waived in early August.
- Javin Whatley: 5’10”, 167 pounds. Caught 41 passes for 490 yards and 5 touchdowns while also returning four kickoffs at Arizona State in 2025. Participated in minicamp with both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Indianapolis Colts.
Looking at all of those, it appears the Seahawks could be in the market
for a big-bodied blocker who might be able to fill part of the void left after Robbie Ouzts was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week.
