The Seattle Mariners announced Saturday that they have designated UTIL Dylan Moore for assignment, activating OF Víctor Robles off the injured list. Robles is likely to be appealing the 10-game suspension he received after hurling a bat following a deluge of hit by pitches in his rehab assignment. As such, he will be active for tonight’s game against Sacramento Athletics southpaw Jeffrey Springs, batting seventh and playing right field.
The move comes in the late stages of a cataclysmic season from
Moore, who started off the season scorching hot before falling into a deep pit of struggles. The 33 year old utility man saw his numbers crater from a 106 wRC+ and a .201/.320/.367 line with strong defense and 32 steals in 38 attempts a season ago. This year, Moore entered a season-long malaise, slumping to a .193/.263/.359 line with a skyrocketing strikeout rate, a 78 wRC+, and some defensive miscues that compounded for an extreme weakness against lefties where the team needed him most.
It’s a sad end of the line for the longest-tenured active big league Mariner. Moore may clear waivers, given his salary is not minimum. His clearance returns Robles to the fold, where he will hopefully have time to get up to speed and better support Seattle against lefties. If his suspension appeal is resolved, he’ll serve it immediately, leaving the M’s down one player.
