The Athletic has reported Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterbacks coach Greg Olson will be the interim offensive coordinator for the rest of the season to replace Chip Kelly, who was fired on Sunday night.
Here
is a look at Olson’s career:
Last job:
He was the quarterbacks coach of the Seattle Seahawks under Raiders coach Pete Carroll in 2023 and Carroll hired for the same job in Las Vegas this year.
Age:
He is 62 .
Raiders’ history:
This is Olson’s third stint coaching for the Raiders. He was the offensive coordinator from 2013-14 in the Dennis Allen regime and then he had the same job from 2018-21 under Jon Gruden.
Coaching experience:
He’s coached in the NFL for 22 years before not working in 2024. He is an experienced quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.
Why the Raiders would make his the interim OC:
Olson was the most obvious choice for this role. He has 15 years experience as an offensive coordinator. He knows Carroll and he knows this offense. He is equipped to do a professional job the rest of the season. His goal will be easy — keep it simple and try to get star tight end Brock Bowers and rookie running abck Ashton Jeanty going and to take pressure off struggling quarterback Geno Smith and the offensive line. Don’t expect miracles in the final six games. But Olson does know the role.
