Alberto Rodríguez, better known as Alberto Del Rio during his time in WWE and Alberto El Patrón elsewhere, was arrested Monday (April 6) by police in Mexico on allegations of domestic violence against his wife, according to news reports.
Multiple media outlets in Mexico reported that Alberto’s wife called 911 on the wrestling star before filing a complaint that alleged he beat her.
La Afición, a Mexican sports website, reported injuries were visible on the face and arms of Alberto’s wife when officers
arrested the 48-year-old star. If found guilty, he could face one to seven years in prison, according to La Afición.
The newspaper Milenio wrote: “The woman [Alberto’s wife], who suffered injuries to her face and arms, called 911 for police assistance. State Civil Guard officers arrived at the scene just as she was being attacked and found her with signs of violence, so they arrested the assailant.”
The paper added Del Rio was turned over to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of San Luis Potosí (FGE) to face charges.
Del Rio comes from a famous family of Mexican luchadors. His father, Dos Caras, was a star in the 1970s and 1980s, while uncle Mil Máscaras is one of the most famous masked wrestlers in history.
Alberto himself has managed a considerable amount of success in the business himself. He signed with WWE in 2009 and went on to win the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship twice each. He was also the winner of the 2011 Royal Rumble and the 2011 Money in the Bank ladder match.
He was let go from WWE in 2014 following reports of an altercation with a company employee, but he returned in 2015. A year later, he was granted his release from WWE with repots suggesting he was unhappy with creative decisions.
Aside from occasional appearances in independent promotions in the U.S., Alberto has primarily wrestled in Mexico in recent years. When WWE bought AAA last year, Alberto El Patrón was the reigning AAA Mega Champion, leading to speculation that he may turn up again in storylines for his former employer. However, he never appeared on WWE programming and hasn’t been seen in AAA since the summer of 2025.
Del Rio has previously faced serious allegations of violence against women. His former girlfriend Saraya Bevis (known as Paige in WWE) spoke about being the victim of physical abuse in a 2020 interview without naming Alberto. He seemed to think she was talking about him by responding to TMZ that she abused him.
Also in 2020, Alberto was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting and beating another former girlfriend. He was later indicated by a grand jury and charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault in that case, but those charges were dropped when a witness in the case went missing before the trial.
Alberto has denied the previous allegations against him.
