There was definitely a chill in the air for last night’s Yankees comeback win over the A’s, as many fans caught on the broadcast were bundled up for the cold weather. Our own John Griffin was at the game and compared getting onto the 4 train after the final out to getting into a sauna. By that time, the RealFeel from Accuweather was in the 20s. Don’t like that!
The Yankees’ Triple-A and Double-A affiliates didn’t even play due to the cold weather, with both Scranton and Binghamton (where Somerset
was playing) electing to push their home openers to later in the week. Who could blame them? Sure, you can play in weather that cold, but for those teams in particular, the home opener is supposed to be a fun, celebratory time! It’s hard to get that same magic when you’re freezing.
The topic of weather brings us to today’s question. What was the coldest Yankees game you can remember attending? Some candidates that immediately jump to mind as possibilities are the somewhat-infamous 1996 home opener, when Andy Pettitte pitched through the snowflakes …
… and Game 1 of the 2009 ALCS against the Angels, when by the end of the night, it was chilly, rainy, and completely understandable for Robinson Canó to go for as much warmth as possible.
I didn’t go to either of these games, so I think my answer is probably Game 5 of the 2012 ALDS against the Orioles. The first-pitch weather was merely brisk, but soon, temperatures dropped and the wind made everything so cold, especially sitting near the top of the upper deck, which is about the only place I could afford for a playoff game right after graduating college. CC Sabathia’s complete-game gem warmed our spirits, anyway.
So what’s your answer?
Today on the site, Jeremy will discuss how Giancarlo Stanton’s surprisingly aggressive baserunning offers the ol’ leadership by example, Madison will present the latest edition of the Rivalry Roundup, Sam will celebrate what would’ve been the 80th birthday of 1970s Yankees icon Catfish Hunter (fitting for the Yanks/A’s matchup today), John will parse Ryan McMahon’s early-season defensive plays to see if there are signs of concern, and Jonathan will tip his cap to the start of the Masters by offering a guide of who to root for based on your favorite players.
