Buffalo Bills fans are riding high at the moment. Why shouldn’t that be the case? The team is doing well with first-year head coach Joe Brady, and a defense in the process of an overhaul under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.
Many expected growing pains, and there more than a handful of them to consider. However, with Josh Allen at quarterback a lot of blemishes are bushed to the side. Winning is the only stat that truly matters in professional sports.
Now 3-0 and heading into an important AFC
East matchup with the New England Patriots, the Bills could put some meaningful distance between themselves and New England (currently 1-2). It’s important to remember that the Patriots got off to a similar start last year before leveraging their schedule and key matchups toward a trip to the Super Bowl.
It’s crazy what can change in a few months’ time, right? Last season, Patriots fans were eating pie in the sky over quarterback Drake Maye and their team’s certain ride into a new dynasty. Now, a massive amount of doubt has crept in to cloud the sky.
It’s the Bills that look like serious contenders once again, and they’ve taken advantage of every moment to this point. It should be no surprise then that Buffalo Rumblings readers were very confident in Buffalo heading into today’s matchup with New England.
How confident? Very, as in 91% of voters believe the Bills will defeat the Patriots in Week 4. Perhaps the more interesting number is the 9% of voters who aren’t confident in Buffalo’s chances this afternoon.
Similarly, Rumblers overwhelmingly approve of the Bills right now, with 88% of voters confident in the direction of the team under new head coach Joe Brady and new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, plus president of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane.
So what about those Patriots fans? Just 9% of Pats Pulpit voters remain confident in New England’s direction under head coach Mike Vrabel and company. To be certain, a lot of the concern has to do with Maye’s play through three games to start the season.
A couple of national polls SB Nation struck me as interesting. First up is the poll that asked which team is in the most trouble after a loss in Week 3. None of the six teams listed were the Patriots, with the Los Angeles Chargers taking top billing in this poll at 47%.
It feels like New England has very little room for error in a first-place schedule. But voters disagree.
This last poll is interesting as it relates to the Bills. The question asked voters to weigh in with how much they feel an experienced backup quarterback is worth right now. The majority (40%) believe the right answer is a Day 3 draft pick.
Not far behind are the 36% of voters who would be okay with their team giving up a Day 2 draft pick for an experienced backup quarterback. While 20% of voters only want to see their team sign someone in free agency.
A bold minority of votes (4%) say they’d be okay if their favorite team gave up a first-round draft pick.
So what’s it worth to you, Bills Mafia — and does Kyle Allen fit the bill?
