Welcome to the FC Bayern Campus Round Up, where the matches of Bayern Munich’s U-23 and U-17 squads are recapped, line ups are provided and the highlights to the matches are hyperlinked on top of their respective score line. Remember, highlights for each match can be watched for free once one has established an account on Bayern’s website. Unfortunately, the highlights for the U-17 match were again not released. To hopefully make up for it, here is the finale of the U-15 Elite Cup.
Information on the
matches of the U-23, U-19 and U-17 teams is provided by the official FC Bayern website here, here and here, respectively. If you wish to learn more about the format of the U-17 and U-19’s youth leagues and what is at stake, you can find more info here. Without further ado, here is the round up:

After winning two back to back matches recently, it is back down to earth for Bayern’s U-23s as their travels to Buchbach end in a simple defeat. There is a very good excuse for the loss, though, which also explains the strange lineup and the missing players: The team’s schedule saw the U-19s (and many of this iteration’s U-23s) play Bodø/Glimt in the UEFA Youth League on Thursday. One day later, they were expected to face Buchbach. This naturally meant the players who played a significant role in the 6-1 win over the Norwegians could not play in this match.
All the players in the parentheses were therefore ruled out of the match. All of a sudden, Bayern would have to travel to unbeaten league leaders TSV Buchbach with a skeleton squad.
Still, this is a big squad and Bayern were able to field a competitive squad. Multiple players, unable to even make the matchday squads in recent weeks, got to see the light of day. These players include Mudaser Sadat, Benedkit Wimmer, Michael Scott and Arthur Degraf. Bajung Darboe also made it into the matchday squad, but he still did not get to play a single minute. By now, it is very clear that his big move from LAFC has been unfortunate for all involved.
The biggest news, though, was that Younes Aitamer finally made the matchday squad, marking 903 days since the last time. Successive ACL injuries have set the poor man’s career back so far, so he will hopefully be able to recover some of his old form.
The game itself was fairly mundane. The two teams canceled each other out through most of the first half, with Buchbach creating the best chance from a header that went just wide. A weak effort from senior center back David Heindl under a bouncing ball, though, allowed Stoßberger to run through on goal and score the first in the 46th minute. A foul from Allen Junior Lambe then saw them get a penalty in the 53rd minute, which goalkeeper Janis Bärtl saved only to helplessly watch the ball go past him on the rebound. The team never faltered but also never truly threatened to make a comeback. So Bayern spends another weekend uncomfortably close to the relegation zone.
1859+1 Munich U-19s 1-3 Bayern U-19s, Matchday 5
Bayern lineup: Podar-Stiube – El-Chaar, Moumouni, Pavlić – Schmid (61. Maric), Osmani – Schaff (69. Horoszczak), Matosevic (88. Horvath), Imade (69. Pucci) – Egwuatu (88. von Taube).
Goals: 0:1 Imade (19.), 0:2 Osmani (42.), 1:2 Curic (64.), 1:3 Osmani (84.)
Unavailable players: Matthias Kösters, Aristide Hentcho Nseke, Thibault Maspimby
Position: 2., 12 points
Fortunately, the U-19s’ match was on Sunday. This allowed all the players who lined up against Bodø/Glimt to play in the derby against 1859+1, as well. Still, multiple players (such as Chris Afanou) were pulled up to the U-23s, which resulted in a slightly weird lineup. Ryan Moumouni, usually at RB, lined up in the center of defense. Leopold Schmid and Erblin Osmani, two typically deep lying midfielders, played next to each other for the first time. And attacking midfield Simon Schaff played on the right.
The result was a slightly disjointed team performance, in which the Bavarians struggled to really string passes together but also managed to press well, resulting in a match with of little notable quality in which Bayern camped in the half of the hosts but were unable to create much. Such a game state can only be livened up by moments of individual quality and/or set pieces and Wisdom Imade duly answered the call. The left winger received the ball wide of the penalty area but squared up well to his marker, waitied for the run of left back Nuraj to win him some space before cutting back and immediately shooting, managing the bend the ball beautifully into the far corner. The second came via a set piece, as Erblin Osmani headed in from close range to secure a 2-0 lead just before half-time.
What control Bayern had over the game evaporated in the second half and resulted in much more of an end to end match, with 1859+1 arguably creating the better chances until they got their goal in the 64th minute, as a set piece played into the box was redirected back to the middle for an easy finish. The game continued to go back and forth, but was eventually decided by a late penalty from Erblin Osmani. Matteo Marić, who has somewhat struggled to earn regular minutes following his summer move from RB Salzburg, won an important tackle near the halfway line, Filip Pavić played an immediate pass forward to Frank Egwuatu and he managed to dribble tens of yards, beat his opponents and force said opponent to take the team’s #9 down in the box. Osmani’s subsequent penalty was clinical, slotted into the side netting of the goal to seal Bayern’s win.
SSV Ulm 4-3 Bayern U-17s, Matchday 6
Bayern lineup: Sießmeier – Etüz, Nduka (46. Dachgruber), Schreyer, Herber – Ciglar, Mujic (72. Hoffmann), Rieber (46. Mahr) – Ludwig, Krasniqi, Hiseni.
Goals: 1:0 Erdugan (7.), 2:0 Erdugan (10.), 2:1 Ciglar (28.), 3:1 Krieger (50.), 3:2 Ciglar (70.), 4:2 Krieger (71.), 4:3 Ludwig (89.)
This was embarrassing. Bayern traveled to Ulm as the clear favorites, having collected 15 points in the past 5 games to the hosts’ 1 point in 5 games. Yet the Bavarians allowed SSV Ulm to collect their first win of the season through awful defending. Wasteful finishing did not help, but the offense is never the problem when a team concedes 4 goals in one game. Lars Bender will need to return to the drawing board to fix what is quickly becoming a very leaky defense, having conceded at least 2 goals for the past 4 games in a row.
Bonus: U-15s in Elite Cup
The U-15 Elite Cup is a competition that brings teams from the strongest academies from the strongest teams in the world together for one weekend with one goal: To win the Cup. The U-15 teams of FC Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, FC Porto, and Galatasaray all traveled to Munich to participate. Among all the teams, though, Bayern stood out. They successfully navigated the three game group phase, drawing 1-1 with Chelsea before overcoming Galatasaray and FC Barcelona 2-0 and 3-1, respectively.
This saw Bayern advance to the quarterfinals, where they promptly annihilated Arsenal 4-0. A semifinal matchup against Barcelona followed, where the Bavarians would claim their second victory over the Blaugranes (1-1, 5-4 on penalties). They faced FC Porto in the final, though they unfortunately could not overcome the final hurdle (0-0, 3-4 on penalties). As mentioned above, the final match (as well as the 3rd place match between Barcelona and Inter Milan can be seen here. Go check it out.
