Another day, another dollar, and plenty of rumors.
CM Punk is back
WWE went with a surprise that wasn’t all that surprising in the main event of this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw in Chicago — CM Punk making his return to television in front of his adoring hometown fans. He did so in place of Cody Rhodes, who was deemed medically unfit earlier in the night after a sneak attack from GUNTHER. Punk was given the shot at Sami Zayn and the WWE championship, and he emerged victorious.
That paves the way for WWE to
go ahead and book Punk vs. Rhodes in a long awaited match at SummerSlam on Aug. 1 or 2 in Minneapolis. WRKD Wrestling is already indicating that’s exactly what WWE is planning to do.
Meanwhile, PW Insider is reiterating that while there have been repeated claims of issues between Punk and WWE “there were none” and he was simply taking time off to recharge after WrestleMania. They, too, back the idea of this leading to Punk vs. Rhodes, saying it “has been discussed internally for many months.”
Other rumors floating around
- According to Bryan Alvarez, there are plenty of people in AEW who aren’t thrilled at the prospect of Sheamus coming to the company. Everyone likes him a lot personally but the belief is there are too many people under contract and not enough TV time to go around already.
- Fightful chimes in to say Sheamus’ former WWE tag team partner and good friend Claudio Castagnoli is expected to be one of many within the company to push for AEW to sign him.
- Fightful also mentioned on the “In The Weeds” show that Sheamus original deal was reported to expire in 2029, so something appears to have changed in his status. It’s unclear exactly when his contract with WWE is officially up still. They did say when WWE tried to restructure his deal it was within months of its expiration anyway, so no point in outright releasing him.
- Jeff Jarrett indicated to The Ariel Helwani Show in a recent interview that he could be in the market to buy TNA, if the right opportunity came along.
- Per Fightful Select, there has been no heat on RUSH for the injury MJF suffered during their match last month, and especially not from MJF himself.
