Given the general defensive abilities of both Marquette and Seton Hall, a draw always felt like a very likely possibility on Wednesday evening in South Orange. It’s just that Scoreless Draw felt kind of likely, not the 1-1 tie that we got from the Golden Eagles and the Pirates.
Gianna Angelillo, SHU’s leading scorer, got the scoring started in the first half, getting loose down the right side and then flipping her first touch at the end, up and over Marquette keeper Mia Hurd. Not much she could have
done to make the save here to keep the match scoreless in the 28th minute.
Marquette had a shots advantage at that point of the match, so that goal was a bit against how things were going. Seton Hall got even from there, and the two squads ended the first 45 minutes all even at eight shots each. It would appear that the Golden Eagles had the better adjustment at halftime, because they came out pelting Kate Kleinsmith with shots. The Seton Hall keeper had to make three saves in the first 10-ish minutes of the second half to keep her team out in front. That’s good for her, because hoooooooboy, does it really look like she screwed up how to play this corner kick from Callie Hefner.
Right? It looks like Kleinsmith tried to scoot out to play the ball but then didn’t try very hard to get to the ball, and so it ended up with Shea and she headed it in for the equalizer. There’s not even that much steam on Shea’s attempt, but because Kleinsmith is standing next to her at the moment, she didn’t need that much velocity to get it home.
That came in the 65th minute, and the early flurry of shots helped Marquette have a 7-3 advantage in shots in the second half. MU very nearly had an eighth shot attempt in the second half, as the battle to the end resulted in one last dangerous free kick for the Golden Eagles. It was a quality free kick in the final 10 seconds of the match, but Marquette just couldn’t get the right touches on the far end, and that was that.
The draw moves Marquette to 7-2-8 on the year and 3-1-4 in Big East action. The Golden Eagles are third in points with 13, trailing only Xavier (21 points) and Villanova (17).
