Alistair Overeem is ready for one last run.
The former UFC heavyweight, who can’t seem to make up his mind about retiring from combat sports, is looking to settle his longstanding feud with Rico Verhoeven inside the boxing ring at Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam, followed by bouts in both kickboxing and MMA. Boxing Media first reported the potential showdown and reps from Overeem’s side confirmed that “Demolition Man” was in talks to return.
So much for that career in politics.
That may sound like
a mismatch when you consider the 46-year-old Overeem has not competed in nearly four years and Verhoeven is coming off a near-upset over Oleksandr Usyk earlier this year in Egypt. In addition, Overeem made drastic diet changes (much to the delight of the equestrian community) and claimed to uncover the secret behind preventing cancer.
There was also that drug-testing fiasco from early 2023.
Overeem and Verhoeven were in talks to collide multiple times over the years and finally secured a booking under the GLORY kickboxing banner back in late 2021; however, Overeem was forced to withdraw due to injury. As for Verhoeven, he remains one of the top free agents in combat sports and continues to tease a potential Francis Ngannou showdown under the new-look MVP MMA banner in 2027.
