The Pittsburgh Pirates offense has cooled off severely after the All Star break but in the first half of the season they were red hot ranked as one of the top offenses in the league. A lot of that is because of veteran second baseman Brandon Lowe.
The Pirates traded for Lowe from the Tampa Bay Rays on December 19, 2025, as part of a three-team deal that also involved the Houston Astros. The Bucs also received outfielder Jake Mangum and pitcher Mason Montgomery. The Pirates sent RHP Mike Burrows to Houston.
Lowe has been the best hitter for Pittsburgh this season. He has a .249 Batting average with 27 home runs and 80 RBIs on the season. Lowe’s 27 homers and 80 RBIS both lead all second basemen.
To say Lowe has had a great season is an understatement which is why they need to bring him back. After the season Lowe will be a free agent and it will be a big loss to the lineup if he is not back.
The Pirates needed the power in the lineup and Lowe brought that. This shouldn’t be a surprise since Lowe had 31 homers last year and his season high is 39 which he got in 2021 with the Rays.
This organization is notoriously known for not wanting to spend money in the offseason. Their move last year to get Lowe was a big surprise because they rarely make big trades in the offseason like that. They need to break that habit and sign Lowe, having a veteran bat in that lineup that can bring some power is a must especially for a young team like the Pirates.
This is not a fluke season from Lowe and he has been dependable and consistent every year he has been in the league. The Buccos need to bring Lowe back and give him a fresh contract and they can start building a solid lineup for the 2027 season.
