As the Myles Garrett trade rumors continue to linger, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated is now adding his own speculation from a national level
on possibilities surrounding the reigning defensive MVP of the league:I wouldn’t rule anything out. And I’ve said this before, I think it makes sense for Cleveland to move Garrett now. He’s still a great player, and he’d bring a massive haul. But his timeline doesn’t really align with those of the 2025 and 2026 draft classes that Cleveland hopes will lay the foundation
for the franchise moving forward. Which means the Browns have to be honest with themselves about where they are, and how likely it is that those guys come of age, and a quarterback is entrenched, while Garrett’s still in his prime.
Where you don’t want to be is in a place where Garrett falls off, or his trade value tumbles because you waited too long, just as all the young talent comes together. So I’d look at it, for sure. And I wouldn’t be stunned if, quietly, they have.
I understand why people are connecting some dots, with the team having restructured Garrett’s contract earlier this offseason, Todd Monken not having met with him personally yet, etc, but let’s see what happens when mandatory minicamp arrives in mid-June. The biggest takeaway I have from Breer’s thoughts are that he does not mention any reports or sources indicating that a move could be on the way — everything is just speculation on what might make sense for Cleveland.
I understand the value of a potential trade if you don’t think the Browns are set to compete any time soon, but I also can’t imagine trading away a Hall of Famer and depleting the defense of its biggest spark for a new coach who should be trying to convince the locker room they can win now in a league that is very capable of seeing teams go from the bottom to the postseason in a short span.
