With Keyshawn Davis set to return from his layoff in a January 31 fight against Jamaine Ortiz on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson, he talks to Ring Magazine’s panel about what this fight means
to him and where he’s looking to take his career going forward. Here are some excerpts of what he had to say with the full interview in the link at the top.
Keyshawn on being reinvigorated for this upcoming fight against Jamaine Ortiz
“A new fire has been lit. I had learned a lot during this layoff, learned a real lot about myself, about the people I was working with, my loved ones and everything else. So, this is a second chance for me, literally. I’m just blessed to have a second chance, especially off of the layoff so I’m excited, I’m ready.
“I feel like every great had that moment (of adversity) and I feel like this is my moment right here where I’m about to rewrite my chapter…”
On who is the opponent that will truly put him on the map
“All I got to do is keep doing what I’m doing, man…I feel like the fight is January 31. Like Jamaine Ortiz, he done fought Lomachenko, you know, he done fought Teofimo, he been on the bigger stages than me, honestly. Even though I feel like I probably got the bigger name, that doesn’t matter. That guy can really, really fight…When I do my thing with bro, it’s going to be undeniable.”
On never wanting to fight Shakur Stevenson despite now being in the same weight class
“Look, I’m 26 years old, I see the boxing landscape. I understand Shakur going to be the 140 champ and that’s ‘my division’ — I feel like boxing is my division. I feel I can really do whatever I want to do. And I know what I want to do after I beat Jamaine, I want to go to 147 and get a 147 title.”
On how training is going since splitting with Brian McIntyre (a subject neither has been willing to discuss thus far)
“Let me tell ya’ll, since August I’ve been training. I’ve been ready. I just needed a date.”
On his interest in fighting Richardson Hitchins
“Let me tell ya’ll the plan because I feel like it’s what’s going to happen…After I beat Jamaine Ortiz, God willing, I’m going to go to 147 and become a 147 champion. And then I’m going to defend it against somebody at 147.”
